SCIP Hospital Toolkit
Overview
Team members from the seven Arizona hospitals participating in the CMS Surgical
Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Identified Participant Group (IPG) were asked, "Based
on what you know now, what do you wish you had known at the start of the project?"
The group described a toolkit that included a step-by-step plan for implementing
SCIP. They indicated that having resources and references was helpful, but that
the teams did not always know what do to do with the material or how to effectively
sequence the interventions. The Work Plan included in this Toolkit (see the Complete
Toolkit download, below) is the result of their comments.
The Work Plan (marked in bold red letters in the bookmarks section of the Toolkit
PDF) is structured according to "Who, Will Do What, By When." It is intended to
be a guideline (though not a blueprint) for implementing a surgical care improvement
program. Hospitals that are just beginning to prepare for SCIP will find the Work
Plan to be a useful tool for determining if there are any gaps in their surgical
care improvement processes.
"Who" describes the role of the person who will be accountable and responsible for
the task. "Will Do What" is the suggested task. Recommended references and resources
are included with each task to assist with program implementation. "By When" is
divided into time segments of the first 30 days, the second 30 days, etc. Teams
may find it useful to reconfigure the due dates and establish their own time lines
to more easily manage the tasks.
Throughout the Work Plan, references are made to materials located elsewhere in
the Toolkit that support the particular item being discussed. In the Toolkit PDF,
each referenced item in the Work Plan has a red box around it, indicating that it
is hyperlinked. Clicking inside the red box will jump you to that place in the Toolkit
where the supportive material is located. Click on the Back (Left) Arrow at the
bottom of your Acrobat Reader screen to return to your original place in the Work
Plan.
The "Shared Tools" section of the Toolkit contains information and tools from the
SCIP IPG teams. The descriptions provided by each team include effective strategies,
valuable lessons learned, and barriers that they encountered (and usually overcame).
The teams have graciously provided the tools they developed or modified so that
others may adapt them for use in their own surgical care improvement process interventions.
Both the "Shared Tools" and "Resources" sections of the Toolkit contain documents
that hospital SCIP teams may want to modify for their own use. These native-format
files are also embedded in the PDF version of the Toolkit: They can be accessed
by double-clicking on the icon found on that document's PDF page. After opening
the native-format file, save it to your computer hard disk before attempting to
make changes.
