The National Pneumonia
Project is part of a comprehensive national health care quality improvement
program by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Health Services Advisory Group’s (HSAG) role is to assist hospitals in
the process to meet the project’s objectives.
Main
Objective To decrease
morbidity and mortality associated with community-acquired pneumonia in
Medicare beneficiaries.
Performance Measures
Increase
the number of inpatients who receive the first dose of antibiotics within
four hours after arrival,
Increase
the use of antibiotic therapy consistent with current guidelines,
Increase
the collection of blood cultures within 24 hours prior to or after hospital
arrival,
Increase
the collection of blood cultures prior to the first antibiotic received
in the hospital,
Increase
the number of inpatients screened for influenza and pneumococcal immunization
status, and vaccinated prior to discharge, if indicated,
Decrease
the number of smokers by providing smoking cessation advice/counseling,
Increase
the collection of arterial oxygenation assessment during the first 24
hours.
